Craft & Skill Workshops

 Please call for info.

Like our native ancestors, we use the art of questioning and the backdrop of nature in order to create a classroom that feels more like the playground; and indeed it is! Games, stories, tracking, and wilderness living skills are just a few of the many tools that we use in order to help children connect with their world and develop a sense of who they are and what they stand for. Ultimately, we strive to help each child find their individual voice so that they can learn to ask their own questions and seek out their own experiences.

After-School Mentoring    FALL '08
For 1st to 8th graders

An introduction to the natural world is where we begin this journey. Through a variety of games and activities, we show children the secrets of lost-proofing and navigation, thus, allowing them to feel more confident and at home in the woods. We then turn to our greatest teachers; the animals, so that we may learn to move as one with all things. Shelter building, tracking, stalking (slow movement), and animal observation, are just a few of the many things that help children discover their important role in this world. At the end of each session, we gather as a small community or clan, in order to share our observations and discoveries. Here, children make connections to their daily lives so that they may incorporate these valuable lessons into whatever they might encounter elsewhere.

Our older and more experienced participants are frequently challenged to set higher standards for themselves and their learning. While the skills they learn become increasingly more difficult, so too, are the responsibilities that come with  each one. These real-life wilderness skills act as a metaphor for the challenges that each child will likely experience as they enter their teenage years and allow them to draw upon the wisdom through their experiences at FFWP.

In a time when the media reports that the vast majority of our children are suffering from "nature deficit disorder," we strive to reconnect children with the simple joys of exploring nature so that they may reconnect with the human blueprint.

High School Apprenticeship

For dedicated High School Students only

The apprenticeship has been designed for dedicated high school aged students who not only wish to take their own learning further by studying alongside their peers at the pace of their own choosing, but who also recognize the importances of sharing their learning with those younger then themselves.

"I've learned that there are far more subtle ways to approach life

than the common, forceful way that most take. In applying this to my life,

I have accomplished things that would not have been possible otherwise."

                                                                                                      -HS senior/Apprentice

"I feel that I've learned to hear what peoples needs are

and I am better prepared to help them meet those needs."

                                                                                 -HS freshman/Apprentice

"One of the strongest points of the apprenticeship has been to witness

the look of joy in the faces of the children I work with each week and to know

that I played a role in creating that joy. It just makes me so happy!"

                                                                                                     -HS Sophmore/Apprentice

"I've realized that I have something special to offer, gifts,

                                          that I didn't even know I had."

                                                                                                     -HS Sophmore/Apprentice

"I am so much more outgoing than I was before joining the apprenticeship!"

                                                                                                     -HS Senior/Apprentice

The Family Nature Initiative

The Family Nature Initiative is a dynamic course in learning to read the human blueprint and the role that  nature plays in the development of the self and family, so that parents and children may enhance their abilities to; communicate with one another, work together, celebrate, and to reflect upon the family they wish to create.

Each gathering will center around a  theme. After a brief welcome, children will head out with seasoned mentors to play in and explore the natural world. Meanwhile, parents will remain behind in order to focus on the monthly topic with staff and guest instructors.  During this period, parents, grandparent, aunts, uncles, and other family members will be instructed in a wide range of nature-based and cultural mentoring skills to empower them with powerful tools that will allow them deepen the connection to the children in their lives and the land that sustains them.

The second half of the day will allow adult participants to put their new awareness and understanding to work by experiencing the natural world with their families. Together, parents and their children will celebrate and enjoy one another as they seek to uncover the natural mysteries that are all around. During this time, staff will support parents by asking thought-provoking questions, making observations, encouraging individuals to try new skills, and demonstrating the application of what was discussed in the adult learning circle. This period is designed to empower each adult so that they may apply these teachings at home and elsewhere. Each participant will get out of the experience, exactly what they put into it!
